| Gender Differences in the Emotional Labor and Depressive Symptoms |

| Abstract |
Background
: The main purposes of this study were to explore the differences of emotional labor according to gender and to determine the factors influencing depressive symptoms according to gender. Methods : Participants included 242 persons (male 126, female 116) working at hotels, insurance companies, and department stores. The survey questionnaire included sociodemographic characteristics, daily life stress, job stress, social support, characteristics of emotional labor, and depression. Results : Females showed significantly higher scores for frequency and duration of emotional labor than males. Multiple regression analysis showed that symptoms of depression were associated with a low duration and high variety of emotional labor among males. Among females, depressive symptoms were associated with a high frequency of emotional labor. Conclusions : The results of this study would help to set up health promotion and disease prevention strategies for emotional labor workers.
