Spiritual Well-Being and Life Stress of Nursing Students |
|
Abstract |
Background The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between spiritual well-being and life stress in nursing students.
Methods Participants were 305 nursing students. Instruments used were the spiritual well-being scale developed by Paloutzian & Ellison (1982) and the life stress scale developed by Jeon et al. (2000). The collected data were analyzed by SPSS WIN 12.0 program.
Results The mean score on the spiritual well-being scale was 2.65 (0.43). The mean score on the life stress scale was 1.28 (1.04). There were significant differences between religion, participation in religion, influence by religion, and satisfaction with nursing and spiritual well-being. There were significant differences between Grades of the Students, economic status, existence of parent(s), marital status of parent, health status, and satisfaction withnursing and life stress. There was significant negative correlation between existential well-being and life stress.
Conclusions This study shows that promoting spiritual well-being is an important factor for reducing the level of stress in nursing students. A bio-psycho-social spiritual model is needed to understand the relationships among life stress, health or disease in terms of prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation.
